Community Service Projects/Fund Raisers

Community Service Programs

  1. Lincoln Food Bank Backpack Program – Club members prepare backpacks each Friday of the school year at Calvert Elementary School.
  2. Belmont (Educare) Program “Reading to Kids” – Sunrise members read a book to four classes each month, during the school year, in partnership with Northeast Kiwanis. They also purchase and distribute the books to each student.
  3. Community Action – Preschool Program – Sunrise Kiwanis has sponsored a Preschool Class for several years and also provided books to the students. This has been their Signature Project.
  4. Lincoln Children’s Zoo
    1. Zoo Passes to Families – Sunrise has provided passes to families in partnership with Community Action.
    1. Zoo Train Engineers – Several members drive the Zoo Train each month and also volunteer for the Zoo Lights activity.
  5. Key Club at North Star High School – Sunrise sponsors a new Key Club at North Star High School. It gained its Charter in 2023.
  6. Teammates – Several members are Teammates. In addition, Sunrise Kiwanis provides a scholarship each year that is awarded to a graduating senior.
  7. YMCA Camp Kitaki – Sunrise provides scholarships for children to attend Camp Kitaki. The camp is a resident summer camp facility for ages 7-17, whose purpose is to build strong kids and adults through programs that promote positive identity, relationships, values, and skills in a unique natural setting.
  8. Cedars Youth Services – Sunrise has supported several projects including wrapping presents for Christmas for families and providing Hygiene Products for the older kids/young adults that they support.
  9. Salvation Army – Provide Christmas Gifts for children and provide resources for Bell Ringing.
  10. Farm City Breakfast – Sunrise has supported this activity for several years with area Kiwanis Clubs & FFA students to honor a farm family.
  11. Infant Car Seats – Provided seats for needy families and partnered with other Kiwanis clubs as a challenge grant.
  12. Peoples City Mission – Members serve evening meals once a month at the Peoples City Mission.
  13. Many other projects have been supported and completed over the past 50 years.

Fundraisers

  1. Concessions at Haymarket Park for Nebraska Home Baseball Games – Sunrise Members work at one of the Concession Stands at Nebraska Husker Games each spring.
  2. Annual Soup Supper held at St. Marks United Methodist Church – Soup Supper is held in the fall in conjunction with a Silent Auction.
  3. Tax Lien Sale – Lancaster County holds a Tax Lien sale on the first Monday in March. Sunrise has participated in this sale for many years.
